{"id":1497,"date":"2011-02-19T18:27:36","date_gmt":"2011-02-19T18:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helen-frost.co.uk\/wp\/?p=1497"},"modified":"2011-03-29T19:54:59","modified_gmt":"2011-03-29T19:54:59","slug":"gesture-drawing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helen-frost.co.uk\/wp\/gesture-drawing\/","title":{"rendered":"Gesture drawing"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Good gesture is crucial to life drawing; without it even the best constructed, most beautifully rendered drawing is stiff and soulless.<\/h4>\n<h4>So, what is gesture in drawing?<\/h4>\n<p>Generally:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gesture\"><strong>gesture<\/strong><\/a> is a form of <a title=\"Non-verbal communication\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-verbal_communication\">non-verbal communication<\/a> in which visible bodily actions communicate particular messages&#8230;. Gestures allow individuals to communicate a variety of feelings and  thoughts, from contempt and hostility to approval and affection, often  together with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Body_language\">body language<\/a> in addition to <a title=\"Word\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Word\">words<\/a> when they speak.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In drawing gesture also expresses the qualitative aspects of a model&#8217;s pose. For example; are the fingers of a hand softly extended with open angles spiralling up their arm, or tensed and sharp with acu<\/p>\n<h4>Gesture and movement.<\/h4>\n<p>To my mind gesture is closely related to movement; it reflects the model&#8217;s habitual stance\/s and patterns of movement.<\/p>\n<p>In any pose, especially a long pose, there will be some movement as the model adjusts to the pose or adopts a subtly different position after breaks.<\/p>\n<p>This can make it tricky to draw a coherent gesture but it also provides a great opportunity to push the gesture.<\/p>\n<p>Analysing this movement within the pose can be a good way to gain a better understanding of the structure of the pose.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve tried making quick sketches of a pose to establish the range of gestures the model is holding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helen-frost.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Range-of-pose.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[1497]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1574  aligncenter\" title=\"Range-of-pose\" src=\"https:\/\/helen-frost.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Range-of-pose-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helen-frost.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Range-of-pose-229x300.jpg 229w, https:\/\/helen-frost.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Range-of-pose.jpg 611w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They also provide a useful start to pushing the gesture.<\/p>\n<h4>Pushing the gesture<\/h4>\n<p>Pushing the gesture means slightly exaggerating the gesture of a pose.
