Last Year’s Louvre

These are my drawings from last year’s Studio Escalier classes at the Louvre. If you’d like a quick flick through you can also look at the video of this sketchbook.

Noticing a Narrative

I noticed as I was drawing these sculptures that they each have a particular set of emotional resonances; some are immediately apparent from looking at the sculptures themselves. Others became more legible through an understanding of the stories to which they refer. Together they coalesced to form a narrative of my journey. The order is a little confused (below, in the sketchbook and naturally in life) but the themes now emerge with striking clarity.

Stepping Back

For me it had several strange qualities; a tour of some place once very familiar but now remote, like primary school revisited as an adult, with all relations altered. Pervaded by a sense of abstraction and deconstruction I feel like I danced around the how and why of my drawing.

Stepping back in a very different way….
